West Wind Willows is a family-owned rural business located 70 km west of Edmonton, Alberta ,Canada. Laurie ,growing up in the harsh winters of the Prairies, always looked forward to the sight of wild pussy willows showing their greyish velvet catkins in the springtime. At last the long winter was over and for a " Corner Gas boy " that meant building a make-shift raft and Huckleberry Finning his way through water swelled sloughs, as Captain Brown, who could turn into a pirate with a flick of imagination. Pussy willows are the harbinger of Spring to millions of people ,especially in the Northern Hemisphere. Later in life Laurie feeling the draw of his farm roots, decided to involve himself in horticulture and began the redevelopment of the native Canadian wild willow. Using stock imported from several European countries he began cross-pollination, grafting, and selecting the most promising results for a product , that would captivate the florist's heart. Now West Wind Willows has the exclusive claim to the finest exotic hybrid pussy willows in the world. Their product is sold across Canada, the USA, Europe , and The Carribean. Production begins in mid-January responding to early demand by "forcing". This involves cutting branches on horseback and bringing the stems indoors ,where they are set in a trough of warm water and allowed to blossom in the warmth of room temperatures.
